How to teach a visually impaired girl to Swim?
I am the head coach for a Special Olympics Swim Team. We have a new swimmer who is legally blind and is comfortable in the water, but cannot swim. I talked with her guardians, and they gave me some basic tips, but does anyone have experience teaching visually impaired children how to swim? She is 13 and also has mental impairment and autism. I could really use some advice. I haven’t done much work with the visually impaired. Thank you!
I’ve had some experience with this… most kids are different, but in general it seems to work by getting them up on a tube (lifeguard) and helping them get comfortable kicking. Don’t worry about arm movements until she can kick. You may have to actually move her legs (hold her at the ankle) and arms for her. You can have her start doing doggy paddle arms while she is kicking on the tube. Also, always be watching her face to make sure she doesn’t drink or choke on water.
Swimming is a progression and having her do a basic doggy paddle to start is going to get her used to coordinating the different body parts. If you are still teaching her when she progresses to doggy paddle you can start teaching her how to do her arms the correct way. Have her stand against the wall and place her arms out in front of her doing front crawl arms one at a time. Then have her on a stroke bar or kick board to start practicing.
I would basically stick with front crawl, but if she can communicate well (or listen and comprehend) you can have her work on back stroke. I would also work on teaching her how to float (just by holding her in place and helping her control breathing and body movement). That could be a lifesaving skill… plus she will never be able to swim without a floatation device if she does not know how to float.
Let me know if I can help any more
